Save Our Sea is one of the environmental sustainability organization focused on the coast and sea environmental protection. In August, 2008, Save Our Sea was founded by 5 young students who put a big concern toward the coast and sea sustainability. Located in Yogyakarta as their concern for Parangtritis Beach and other beaches in Yogyakarta, Save Our Sea works on A Beach Cleaning Day twice a months, every 2 weeks in Parangtritis Beach as their first priority. Save Our Sea now has 4 working units, Research and Developing Unit, External Unit, Community Development Unit, Information and Documentation Unit, excluded the Chief Executive, General Secretary and Treasurer.
Proposed Program Profile
As the aim, Save Our Sea brings a message that sea is not a trash can and would never be a trash can. Sea gave us so much, now it’s our time to pay it back to it. So not only the forest, the sea also needs the protection for their sustainability. Although it’s still young and has the spirit of young changemakers, Save Our Sea growth progressively.
Our programs related to 2 major concerns:
1. Coast and Sea Preservation
The first vision is coast and sea preservation, including the beach cleaning which has been done this several months regularly, called A Beach Cleaning Day. A Beach Cleaning Day is a day to clean up all rubbish along the seashore and was done by our community, seashore livinghood and the volunteers twice a month, every 2 weeks. We also ask tourists in Parangtritis Beach to be involved in this activity, since they also use the beach as a tourism object. This activity aimed to preserve the beach from the human destruction and giving the protection to the clean and health sea environment. The coast and sea preservation also include the beach reforestration by planting the mangroove. This activity aimed to protect the coast and sea environment from its extinction. Mangroove is important to maintain the coast and sea environmental sustainability. We acknowledge that working on mangroove preservation is not that easy. So, now we are looking for help to work on it so we can save our sea together.
2. Community Development
The community development is an assitance program from Save Our Sea toward the seashore community. The activity is about rubbish manufacture, including the 3 ways, reduce, reuse and recycling. This activity related to A Beach Cleaning Day. After collecting the rubbish, separating rubbish based on its kind, and do the recycling and reuse. For the reduce goal, Save Our Sea will assist the community to reduce the use of plastics. Seeing the fact that plactics can be recycled by the sea when it was taken away by the sea. So, not only cleaning but also manufacturing the rubbish. Seeing that the Mother-earth has given so much to us, treated her like a trash can and keep exploitated her is not a proper treatment. So let’s treat her as the way we treat ourselves.
